  18. <p>     In his heyday, James Brown was bigger than life, whether on
  19. a wall or in person. But for the past 16 months the "godfather
  20. of soul" has been in a South Carolina slammer for a 1988
  21. conviction on assault and other charges. This week he'll start
  22. in a work-release program at a community center, where one of
  23. his tasks will be to speak out against drug use. Nights, he'll
  24. return to a nearby minimum-security facility. He's eligible for
  25. parole in 1991, but that's not soon enough for the feisty Free
  26. James Brown campaign.
